New randomlygifted update brings more gift ideas and hopefully less garbage
One of my many side projects is randomlygifted, a random gift idea generator. It’s a site that constantly searches through Amazon, finds cool stuff (mostly) and then spits it out in a completely random fashion. I like to use it as a nice starting point when trying to figure out what kind of gifts to get people.
The Last Express: Poignant, entertaining, and just short of a masterpieceNestled among some of the more recognizable games of 1997 – a list that included Fallout, Final Fantasy 7, and GoldenEye – was a PC adventure/murder mystery game called The Last Express. Published by Broderbund (you might know them for a little-known series called Where In the Crap is Carmen Sandiego, if you’re old enough), The Last Express was released to little fanfare. |
Curiosity (2012) – Carly Rae Jepsen: Catchy at its FinestSo, there’s this new girl in town. Her name’s Carly Rae Jepsen. She’s Canadian, and she just joined Justin Bieber’s new label…WAIT! COME BACK! I was kidding! |

Getting Around AT&T’s Tiered Smartphone Data PlansYou’ve probably heard that AT&T’s $30 unlimited* data plans have been dead and gone since the middle of last year, replaced with a couple of tiered plans (with some hefty overage fees, I might add). But you might not be familiar with a cheaper, lesser-known data plan that gives you unlimited data for your smartphone…with some caveats. (and the first caveat is that it doesn’t work with iPhones) |
22 Days in Japan, Day 18: Exploring TogakushiIt’s a dark, cloudy day. The sun is nowhere to be found in Nagano. Since the ryokan (Japanese inn) that I’m currently staying in isn’t close to Togura station (about a 25 minute walk), Tyler the innkeeper gives me a lift, getting there just as the train is coming in. |

22 Days in Japan, Day 17: Nagano, Rain, and a Scary BridgeKyoto is now miles away, and I’m on the train to my next destination: Nagano. Yep, the same Nagano that hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. It lies in the (more) northern part of Japan that’s so far been largely unexplored (by me). |
Clear Note Widget (Sticky Note App) Now Available For Android PhonesYes, you heard it here first. I actually released an Android app. To be honest, this isn’t my first foray (and probably won’t be the last) into Android. The first was an attempt to make a fun “game” that consisted of the Android mascot running on top of an infinitely-long office building. Or at least running until he (she? it?) crashed into a conveniently-placed, official US Postal Service mailbox. |

The Great Snack Food RoundupTo put it simply, I am a snack fiend. At my worst I was eating roughly six snack bars a day, plus my normal breakfast/lunch/dinner/after-dinner-dessert/midnight snack routine. It was a rough life. So, I hope that all of that relevant snacking experience gives me some special insight on judging the quality and taste of snack foods. Actually, I really needed a break from my un-lucrative side business of writing apps for Android phones. In Java. Which I have since learned is a gigantic pain in the *Dorito*. |
You’ve got an HP Touchpad, now what?I jumped on the HP Touchpad fire sale bandwagon last week knowing absolutely zilch about webOS, tablets, and Touchpads. Hell, I didn’t even know what I’d do with it. But $150 for a sweet 32GB tablet that retailed for $600? Sold! Now that I’ve had a chance to mess around with it, I’ve gotten a better handle on what the Touchpad can and can’t do. Inside: a list of hacks, patches, apps, and other assorted fun stuff to kick your Touchpad experience up a notch. |

Final Fantasy XIII’s problem isn’t linearity: it’s everything elseThere are some good ways to spend fifty hours of your life. Watching the first season of Game of Thrones, for example. But playing through Final Fantasy XIII? Nope, that isn’t one of them. |
