22 Days in Japan, A Series
I spent the past three weeks (+1 day) frolicking in the vast wilderness known as Japan. By myself. It was quite the experience, one of those crazy midlife crisis trips that you only seriously consider once in your life.
A little bit about me. I’m not Japanese. I don’t speak Japanese other than a few words like yes, no, thanks, etc. I understand some common expressions (“cool!”, “too slow!”, “bastard!!”) gleaned from Japanese movies/anime that I watched in college. That proved to be very useless. I also played a lot of video games in college, including Japanese ones. And I couldn’t figure out how to navigate the menus so I taught myself basic hiragana and katakana after borrowing a friend’s textbook. That proved to be surprisingly useful.
Along the way, I stayed in a number of hotels, hostels, and other places that were in-between the two. I met a lot of fun, entertaining people (and maybe some not-so-entertaining people too). I saw some giant Buddhas, a couple of castles, and lots of unintentionally hilarious signs in English.
The following posts are from each day I spent on the trip. Maybe you’ll find these posts engrossing. Maybe these posts will provide some inspiration for your future adventures in Japan. Maybe you think I suck at writing. Sorry, I can’t help you with that one.
Shall we begin?
